PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Business Administration degree program is designed to equip you with the knowledge & understanding of the essential aspects of business theory and practice. Through our courses, students are immersed in a wide-range of topics, such as Marketing, Finance, Economics, Entrepreneurship and Communication. Case-studies, project work, corporate visits, guest speakers and networking events are integrated in the courses, along with project weeks, allowing you to test and continually apply what you‘ve learned in the real world with companies and industry professionals.

To further refine the skill-set needed to be a successful manager, foreign language courses and a mandatory internship, together with additional communication workshops and management seminars accompany your studies.

SPECIALIZATIONS

Financial Services Management

Financial Services Management looks at the different branches of banking: Insurance, Financial Advice and Investment. Students learn about mortgages, loans, insurance, pensions, investments and the stock market. Financial systems and regulations imposed by different countries are illustrated, analysed and compared.

Core aims: Through combining theoretical perspectives with case studies from practice, the programme aims to allow students to develop a critical and contextualised understanding of the issues, problems and solutions faced by and offered to financial service institutions worldwide. Students will learn to understand the function of financial services within a wider economic context, also from the perspective of developing countries.

In addition to the base modules, the programme focuses on various industry specific areas such as pensions and investment, the legal environment of financial services, financial tax regulations, mortgages and real estate. The fundamentals of the banking world and international finance are also studied.

The modules introduce students to key factors driving change in the banking sector, the financial services marketing environment, the key principles of regulation and the global frameworks that exist. Work placement is carried out within a bank or financial services company.

The Financial Services Industry plays a vital role in the world economy, often acting as an intermediator between organisations that require funds and those able to provide financial investment and support.

Customers of the financial services industry include individuals, non-profit organisations and agencies of government, and of course companies and businesses of all sizes.

Financial Services specialists work in various branches of varying sizes, from corporate banks and insurance companies to SME companies advising home owners and private investors on matters relating to their personal finance.

Financial advisors are affiliated to most real estate brokers and law firms and many graduates have gone on to work in international banks such as HSBC in Shanghai, Commercial Bank of China in Beijing, RaboBank Netherlands in Utrecht and ABN AMRO in Rotterdam. Also, many students have also gone on to work for mortgage, investment and insurance companies such as Nationale Nederland, Achmea, and AON Consulting. A number of students have started their own consultancies.

The Financial Services Sector tends to be cyclical: when there is a downturn in the economy the industry requires less graduates, when it starts to recover there is a great shortage! Presently the economy is in recovery!

Marketing & Communication

Bachelor of International Business Administration students complete a series of broad marketing modules, however those students who choose the specialization Marketing and Communication are introduced to the aspects of companies and organisations that affect the success or the organisation.

Marketing & Communication comprises a combination of business marketing strategies, branding and the way that businesses and organizations promote themselves to the outside world. It is the business of creating a constant image that will promote the company, its ideals and its products. Marketing & Communication penetrates deeper than just the production of printed or online material, it deals with the way an organization communicates its messages, both internally and externally.

Business Administrators dealing with the Marketing & Communication strategies of a company are constantly looking at the systems in place, at the human resources and the way in which they are managed, at the supply chain and at the sales pipeline – all areas affected directly by the marketing and communication strategy.

Marketing & Communication deals with branding, imaging, house style, but also with crisis management, downsizing and re-inventing – Marketing & Communication specialists are at the front line of Business Administration!

The Marketing & Communication program is aimed at developing the skills and competencies that a modern Marketing and Public Relations Officer requires.

Students are introduced to modules such as Mass Communication, Public Relations and Company Branding, but also areas of marketing such as Marketing Research, Niche Marketing and E-Presence.

During their final year, students will be asked to design a company communication plan, or a marketing strategy as part of a business plan.

Marketing careers vary a great deal, as the profession comprises many facets and activities. While there are many opportunities, all have a number of things in common, including the stewardship of a concept, a service or a brand and the understanding of the needs and requirements both externally from customers and relations, and internally from the organization or company itself. The communication of a marketing strategy is paramount to the success of a Marketing and Communications officer in any organisation.

That marketing communication can be done in several ways which is why a career in marketing and communication opens several doors as a profession.

Marketing and Communication specialists take a product or service and associate that product or service with a brand name, a house style and a philosophy. Marketing can be defined as being the intermediary function between product development and sales. It can be seen as the storehouse for advertising, public relations, media planning, sales strategy, and more. Marketing and Communications specialists ensure longevity of a product or company name. They make sure that customers gain a balanced and pleasing feel to the organization or business. A key part of a career in marketing and communication is to understand the needs, preferences, and constraints that define the target group of consumers or the market niche corresponding to the brand through market research.

Marketing and communications specialists are required in every company and across every industry, so the career potential is unlimited.

Many Wittenborg graduates have found direct employment in small sized marketing and communication companies, and some have started their own agencies. These students understand that developing marketing and internal and external communication strategies for companies can be extremely lucrative, specialised work, and that success is often found in the ability to measure solutions. Graduates have also found careers in non profit and government organisations, working in areas such as public relations and international communication.

Economics & Management

The Bachelor specialization of Economics & Management is the broadest of the selection of bachelor specialisations, enabling students to understand management from an international and organisational, economy based perspective.

Knowledge of how the economy works has become essential to businesses around the world. The idea that the way companies and organisations, consumers and governments make decisions that will affect the operation, performance and eventual success of a firm has been embedded within business administration, which makes the program Economics & Management the broadest business degree on offer. Economics concerns the conduct of business within the local, social and political environment, as well as looking at the conduct of business, government policy-making, laws and restrictions and the enormous changes taking place within Europe, America, Asia, Africa and the rest of the world.

Management looks at the skills and competencies required to effectively manage a company or organisation within the economy, and the coordination of materials and labor within the scope of the organisation’s mission, goals and defined objectives. It looks carefully at the distinct relationships between the segments of an organisation, and how these segments are united to form a successful and thriving enterprise. Management students look at the way managers function, lead and make decisions, and they consider a manager’s decision making role and effect on the organisations operations.

This program covers many of the IBA fields but focuses on the management of core areas of business that are fundamental to the economics of the organisation, such as quality control and logistics as well as the comparative areas of financial management and business accountancy. Excursions to profit and non-profit organisations will be arranged and Economics and Management students will also be given the opportunity to create a start-up business, through a series of modules including the Business Plan module.

Key business modules include World Wide Business and Law, Logistics, and Quality Management. However, the Economics & Management program also fully prepares students for administering business through modules in Accounting, Bookkeeping and Finance.

During their second year, Economics & Management students will be taught a variety of specialisation courses. Procurement & Production, Business Philosophy and Managing Organisations are among them.

Procurement & Production focuses on the purchasing and supply function of an enterprise. Students have to show how these functions interrelate with the rest of the organisation.

The course Business Philosophy is concerned with the ideas of several economic philosophers (such as Smith, Marx, Keynes, etc.). In class, different approaches will be discussed in order for students to understand the political-economy. The main objective is for students to develop their capacity to read management literature from a more critical perspective and to develop their interest for fundamental questions as part of their evolution as effective executives or managers.

In the course Managing Organisations students learn to identify all organisational resources, including financial, physical and intangible resources and to analyse how they contribute to organizational capabilities and competitive advantage.

Students who choose the Economics & Management program will specialize in the field of understanding macro and micro environments in business and looking at the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. students learn about the management of assets and wealth and market forces which can change a product’s outlook or a company’s market share.

The Economics & Management program does not lead to an industry in itself as it is the broadest of programmes that encompasses literately all industries at many different levels of management. Based on their in-depth knowledge of the commercial environment in which they operate, business administrators who are strong in economics can quickly become key personnel in the management of both large and small organisations, directing and driving the company towards greater turnover, bigger yields and higher profits.

The career prospects of Economics & Management graduates are excellent, with around 30% of graduates choosing to continue their education at Master level and many graduates entering business directly in sectors such as the financial services and real estate sectors, but also companies dealing with international trade, import and export.

Graduates can be found as logistics managers at robust SME manufacturing companies, but also as financial specialists in larger corporations.

CURRICULUM

The school year at New European College is divided into two terms – Winter Term and Summer Term, and six main blocks which last six weeks each. Each six-week block consists of two lesson weeks, followed by a project week, then two more lesson weeks, followed with an exam week, to complete the module.

Languages and Project Weeks are a key components of the Bachelor program. Language courses are offered at the start of each term for the full three blocks. During Project Week, students have the opportunity to work in teams on a practical case or simulation with the goal to present a final ‘pitch’ and evaluate their experience at the end of the week.

English Language Requirement

  • Academic IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. Click here for an overview of the equivalent scores.
  • If the student’s Academic IELTS score is not sufficient and they have a minimum score of 5.0, they can receive a conditional acceptance to the Bachelor program and must participate in a Business English Preparation Program. Once the student passes the Academic IELTS with 6.0 (Bachelor) they can enter their respective program at the next intake.

Students living in the EU must apply 2-4 weeks before the entry date of choice. In case the student does not apply before the deadline, their application will be automatically changed into an application for enrolment to the next block, unless they desire otherwise. In individual cases, an application can be expedited.
