Meet Alina, the Newest Member of Our Admission Team!

We want to warmly welcome Alina Karlova to our admissions team! Alina will be supporting international students throughout their application process as they enroll and begin their studies here at NEC. Get to know Alina better with these 10 interesting facts:

What brought you to New European College? 

In fact, I was brought here by fate, although I don’t really believe in that. But I can’t explain it any other way. I actually came to Germany from Ukraine for two months and then planned to return home. It turned out that I stayed for a longer period, although I did not want to continue living in Germany. After 3 unsuccessful attempts to move, I gave up and decided to just move to another city, i.e. Munich. And I had only one option for admission, I didn’t even consider the others.

 1. What’s something you want to learn or wish you were better at?

I would like to be able to organise my free time better. I hope that it’s not just me, when I have a lot of plans and not enough hours in the day. And of course, language learning is a very cool skill when you work with international students.

 2. What’s your favourite place on earth?

My place of strength is the mountains. I have been skiing since I was 6 years old, so the European Alps and the Ukrainian Carpathians are my best friends. I get a lot of positive energy and a desire to continue conquering this life, just as I conquer the tops of mountains. By the way, I like mountains not only in winter.

3. What’s something you’re proud of?

I am very proud of the fact that I was able to build a life thousands of kilometres away from home, from going to university to buying shelves in Ikea. I’ve surpassed myself so many times that I don’t think I can remember a day when I wasn’t proud of myself, but I’ll write more about that in the next chapter.

 4. What do you hope never changes?

Ukraine’s independence status.

5. What job would you be terrible at?

I am very sensitive to the sight of blood, so I will definitely never be a doctor… I also apparently had a falling out with mathematics once, and now anything related to complex calculations causes me stress :))

6.  What movie title best describes your life?  

Or I could say an animated series. “Adventure Time” describes me as a person who is constantly walking, travelling, and often does not live in one place for more than 3-4 days. Maybe in the future this will change, but I like it that way.

 7.  What’s the best way to start the day? 

I love slow mornings with a cup of coffee, when I can lie in bed for longer and not rush anywhere.

 8. How different was your life one year ago?

A year ago, I was still hesitant about staying in Germany and didn’t know what to do. I was in one of the worst states, to be honest. During this time, I literally “blossomed”. I had a thirst for life, study, work, and learning new things. I had the energy and strength to give people positive things. I became more confident, faster, maybe even prettier.

9. What is special about the place you grew up?

This question makes me want to tell you so many things about Ukraine. But, in short: strong and courageous fighters for freedom and dignity are being raised there. We also have a bombastic cuisine that is definitely worth your attention!

10. Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?

I am very inspired by people who are interested in different things, who know where to buy delicious coffee and what book to read next; people who are sure that they will succeed in life because they do not know failure.
